Realisation

Over the next few weeks, the closeness between Satvik and Rishaa remained, but the charm had faded for her. One rainy evening, Satvik dropped her off at her hostel under a shared umbrella. He leaned in, his tone dropping to something more intimate. "Rishaa, you know I really like spending time with you, right? I think we have something special here."

Rishaa looked at Satvik. He was handsome, talented, and everything a college girl could ask for. But as she looked at him, she didn't feel the butterflies she expected. Instead, her mind immediately flashed to a memory of a rainy day back home, where Kavish had given her his only jacket and walked home drenched, just so she wouldn't catch a cold.

When Satvik talked, she missed Kavish’s dry humor. When Satvik complimented her clothes, she missed how Kavish could read her mood just by the way she walked.

*I am with Satvik, but my soul is searching for Kavish,* she realized with a terrifying clarity.

It wasn't Satvik she loved. Satvik was the excitement of a new life, but Kavish was her home. She had mistaken the comfort of Kavish's presence for grantedness, and the novelty of Satvik for love. But now that Kavish had pulled away, she felt completely lost. She was deeply, hopelessly in love with her best friend.

The semester ended, and they returned home for the winter break. The familiar neighborhood smelled of woodsmoke and winter flowers. One evening, knowing their parents were out for a community dinner, Rishaa walked over to Kavish’s terrace. He was standing by the railing, holding a steaming mug of tea, looking at the foggy street below.

"Kavish," she called out softly.

He turned around, his eyes softening just a fraction before the guarded look returned. "Hey. Dhand bohot hai, andar aaja."

"Nahi, yahin theek hai," she said, walking up to him. She took a deep breath, knowing that if she didn't say it now, she would lose him forever. "Kavish, mujhe tumse kuch zaroori baat karni hai. About us."

Kavish took a sip of his tea. "Bol."

"Main college jaake bilkul badal gayi thi, I know. I got so caught up with Satvik and the new environment that I pushed you away. Mujhe laga tum humesha yahin rahoge, no matter what. But when you walked away, I felt an emptiness that nothing could fill. Satvik confessed to me, but I told him no. Because... because I realized my heart belongs here. With you. Kavish, I love you. Not just as a friend, but I want to be with you."

She looked at him with eyes full of hope, waiting for the smile that used to light up his face.

But the smile didn't come. Kavish looked down at his mug, his silhouette sharp against the winter mist. He let out a long breath that turned into vapor.

"Rishaa... I can't," he said quietly.

Rishaa’s heart dropped. "Kya? Why? Kya tu mujhse pyaar nahi karta? Mujhe pata hai tu karta tha, Kavish. Teri aankhon mein dikhta tha!"

"Haan, karta tha," Kavish said, finally looking directly into her eyes, his voice steady but heavy with unexpressed pain. "School ke pehle din se lekar college ke us birthday night tak, maine sirf tujhse pyaar kiya hai. block letters mein likh ke de sakta hoon ki tu meri life ka sabse bada sach thi."

"Toh phir ab kya problem hai?" tears welled up in her eyes. "If we both love each other, then why are you saying no?"

"Because, Rishaa, you love me out of fear of losing me, not because I am your first choice," Kavish said, his voice breaking slightly but remaining firm. "Jab tak main tere paas free available tha, teri priority koi aur tha. Jaise hi tu college gayi, tujhe ek naya chamakta hua option mila, aur tu chali gayi. Tune ek baar bhi piche mudkar nahi dekha ki tera best friend kis daur se guzar raha hai. Maine akelepan mein raat kaati hain, Rishaa, yeh dekhte hue ki jis ladki ko maine apni duniya maana, uski duniya mein meri koi jagah nahi thi."

He took a step closer, looking at her tear-stained face with deep empathy, but absolute resolve. "Main ab wo purana Kavish nahi hoon jo kisi ke peeche line mein khada rahega. Today, you are realizing my worth because I drew a boundary. Agar kal ko college mein Satvik se bhi koi behtar, koi zyada talented ladka aayega, toh kya guarantees hai ki tu phir se distracted nahi hogi? Love isn't about realizing someone's value only when they walk away. Love is holding onto them when everything else is new and exciting."

Rishaa stood frozen, the tears flowing freely now. The weight of his words hit her like a physical blow. He wasn't punishing her out of anger; he was protecting his own scarred heart.

"Kavish... please," she whispered.

"I love myself enough now to not walk into a relationship where I have to constantly worry about being replaced," Kavish said softly, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder for the last time. "Humein dost rehna chahiye, Rishaa. Apne beech ki us bache hue respect ko mat khoo."

He turned around and walked back inside his house, closing the terrace door gently behind him. Rishaa stood alone in the cold winter air, looking at the closed door, finally understanding the cost of taking a pure heart for granted.
